The Dammuso Circle was founded by a group of dammuso owners who share a deep and personal connection with Pantelleria. The Association grew out of real-life experiences rather than a theoretical idea. We felt the need to come together, share common challenges and create a space where these experiences could become a collective voice. The Dammuso Circle is therefore, first and foremost, a community: different people united by the desire to protect a unique territory with respect and responsibility.

Why create an association?

The Dammuso Circle was founded to give a voice, strength and representation to dammuso owners — both residents and non-residents — who, driven by a deep passion for Pantelleria, have chosen to invest responsibly in protecting a heritage that is unique in the world: restoring abandoned dammusi, bringing agricultural land back into use and keeping alive places that were at risk of being lost. This heritage is made up of architecture, landscape, culture and identity. It is not only a memory of the past, but also a responsibility towards the future. A heritage that needs protection, vision and continuity. This is what inspired the creation of an Association capable of bringing these experiences together and turning them into a shared journey

Promoting the cultural identity of the dammuso as a symbol of Pantelleria

The dammuso is one of the most authentic expressions of Pantelleria’s cultural and landscape identity. The Association is committed to promoting its knowledge, protection and enhancement as an expression of the island’s history, traditional building expertise and harmonious relationship between people and the environment. Through cultural, educational and project-based activities, The Dammuso Circle aims to strengthen awareness of the dammuso as a shared heritage and distinctive symbol of the island, helping to preserve and pass it on to future generations.

Landscape conservation and protection of the environmental balance

The Association promotes the protection of Pantelleria’s landscape as the result of a centuries-old balance between nature and human intervention. Terraces, dry-stone walls and rural architecture form a unique cultural and environmental system that requires constant care and attention. Through awareness-raising initiatives and collaboration with public bodies and institutions, The Dammuso Circle is committed to supporting practices focused on sustainability, biodiversity protection and the preservation of the island’s local identity.

Strengthening and improving
territorial continuity

Territorial continuity is essential to guarantee equal rights for the people of Pantelleria and to support the island’s economic and social development. The Association is committed to promoting an ongoing dialogue with national and regional institutions to ensure stable, predictable and accessible air connections throughout the year. The continued reliance on temporary solutions and repeated extensions does not allow existing issues to be addressed in a structural way and creates uncertainty for residents, businesses and property owners. With this in mind, the Association will support every initiative aimed at strengthening regular and continuous connections with Italy’s main transport hubs, in line with models already adopted in other Italian island communities, promoting the island’s effective integration into the national transport system. Ensuring accessibility means supporting tourism, creating new economic opportunities and reducing geographical isolation, while providing Pantelleria with lasting prospects for development.

Establishment of a technical working group on essential supplies and services

The Association is committed to promoting the establishment of a permanent technical working group dedicated to monitoring and improving the island’s essential supplies and services. Energy, water, transport, waste management and connectivity are fundamental to residents’ quality of life and to the sustainability of economic and tourism activities. Through dialogue among citizens, businesses, service providers and the relevant institutions, the aim is to foster a constructive and ongoing exchange capable of identifying critical issues and shared solutions. A coordinated and planned approach can strengthen service efficiency and support balanced, resilient development, while respecting Pantelleria’s unique island context.

We believe in the value of dialogue and participation as essential tools for shaping Pantelleria’s future. The Association promotes dialogue among residents, property owners, institutions and local stakeholders, helping to build a more informed, aware and engaged community in the decisions that affect the island.
