The Dammuso Circle: a circle open to those who love Pantelleria
Pantelleria does not belong to a single category of people.
It belongs to those who were born there, to those who live there all year round, to those who have chosen it as their home, to those who work there, to those who guard it in their daily gestures.
It also belongs to those who, perhaps for twenty years or more, have returned to the island every summer, know the wind, the stone, the light, the districts, the silences, the paths, the walls, the vineyards, the dammusi.
It belongs to those who respect it.
The Dammuso Circle was just born and was born with a simple desire: to contribute to the protection and enhancement of Pantelleria, starting from one of its deepest symbols, the dammuso.
The dammuso is architecture, agricultural memory, landscape, effort, constructive intelligence, adaptation to the wind and the land. It is a form of living that tells the island more than many words.
But our gaze does not stop at the property.
When we talk about dammusi, we are also talking about landscape, environmental protection, territorial continuity, culture, recovery of the existing heritage, the island’s economy, conscious tourism, care of the territory and the future.
This is why The Dammuso Circle wants to be an open place for discussion, listening and participation.
We need residents, owners, people born on the island and people who have chosen the island.
We need ideas, opinions, proposals, skills, different sensitivities.
We need those who have always known Pantelleria and those who, having frequented it for years, have learned to love and respect it.
Our Statute clearly provides for this.
Article 5 establishes that the Association may not only be joined:
“the owners of dammusi on the island of Pantelleria”
but also:
“natural persons or entities that share the purposes of the Association”.
Article 6 also specifies that, in addition to ordinary members, there are also supporting members, namely:
“natural persons or entities who, although not owners or usufructuaries of dammusi or traditional properties, contribute concretely to the activities of the association”.
This means that opening up to those who do not own a dammuso is not a later addition, but is part of our approach from the beginning.
The Dammuso Circle is open to those who share its aims and wish to contribute, with seriousness and a constructive spirit, to the protection and enhancement of Pantelleria.
Anyone who owns a dammuso can join.
Those who have the usufruct can join.
Even those who have nothing on the island, but love it, have been visiting it for years, respect it and feel the desire to participate in a common project, can join.
Because Pantelleria does not need new divisions.
It needs places of dialogue.
People who talk to each other.
Of energies that meet.
Of residents, owners, friends of the island, professionals, loyal travelers and historical visitors capable of recognizing that the beauty of Pantelleria is fragile and must be preserved together.
The protection of dammusi is not a topic reserved for the few.
It is a cultural, landscape, environmental and economic issue.
Defending the dammusi means defending an essential part of the island’s identity. It means directing the recovery of the existing heritage towards respect for history and the landscape. It means recognizing that Pantelleria cannot be treated as just any place, but as a rare balance between nature, architecture, human work and memory.
The Dammuso Circle was created to give voice to this awareness.
Not against anyone.
Not on someone.
Not to divide.
But to create a circle.
A circle open to those who believe that Pantelleria deserves attention, care, responsibility and a future.
